Spiritual Nourishment: Public Health and Spirituality

Spirituality’s role in mental and physical health has always intrigued me, as well as spirituality as it relates to nutrition and diet, environmental consciousness and resource consumption. I am hopeful that the Public Health and Spirituality course I am taking this spring semester at UC Berkeley will provide a platform and community for further exploration.

Growing up in a conservative Christian community in the central valley of California as a young, curious woman posed several challenges. I was interested in exploring a variety of religious traditions, spiritual paths, diets (mostly vegetarian/vegan), sexual orientations and lifestyles, however never felt fully comfortable to explore with the incredible social pressure I experienced from my community. My environmentalism, vegetarianism and feminism were seen by many of my peers as acts of protest against the community and against the church I was most social in. Most importantly, my peers saw my interests as a protest against ‘God’s’ words in the Bible.

After leaving my hometown and moving to Davis, CA to complete my undergraduate education, I found a diverse community of spiritual and religious students at the Cal Aggie Christian Association who were interested in multifaith dialogue. This community provided me an incredible platform for enriching experiences with many faith-based communities and the opportunity to engage with a group of students on spirituality and health-related topics through farming, gardening, composting and cooking activities.

My experience at Davis has provided a strong foundation for my continued interest in learning more about various spiritual paths and communities, how they might support my own spiritual path and how they can work within their communities to foster wellness, mindfulness and environmental consciousness.

Stay posted for updates from my experience!
